Overview
Starting in 2025, QuickServer firmware updates transitioned from the legacy .simg format to an encrypted, digitally signed .pkg format. This article explains the change, its impact on existing devices, and how to confirm the correct format for your device.
What Changed
QuickServer firmware now uses signed .pkg files to ensure firmware authenticity and prevent unauthorized modification. This aligns QuickServer with modern firmware lifecycle practices used across industrial and building automation systems.
Legacy Devices (Pre-2025 QuickServers)
QuickServers shipped before 2025 were designed for .simg firmware. Key facts:
- Pre-2025 devices accept only
.simgfirmware by default. - A transitional
.simgfirmware update is available that enables.pkgsupport on legacy devices. - This transition is one-way — once upgraded to
.pkgsupport, the device will no longer accept.simgfiles. - A factory reset restores the device to its original firmware handling behavior (
.simgacceptance). - All new firmware releases from 2025 onward are in
.pkgformat only.
Mixed environments: If you manage both pre- and post-2025 QuickServers, plan updates carefully. Confirm device manufacturing date before applying firmware. Applying a
.pkgimage to an untransitioned legacy device will fail.
Post-2025 Devices
QuickServers manufactured after 2025 use .pkg firmware exclusively:
- Only
.pkgfirmware can be installed. .simgfirmware is not supported under any circumstances.- Downgrading to
.simgsupport is not possible.
Determining Your Device’s Firmware Format
Check the device label or manufacturing date to determine if your QuickServer is pre- or post-2025. If you are unsure, contact Chipkin support with the model number and serial number.
