MAPIT needed 27 CRAC units to appear cleanly inside Sunbird P-IQ. Chipkin QuickServer converted the Modbus TCP data into an SNMP handoff the DCIM team could use.
For MAPIT, the core problem was not simply connecting Modbus TCP to SNMP. The project had to make cooling-system data from 27 CRAC units usable inside a Sunbird P-IQ DCIM workflow, with a handoff that matched the customer’s monitoring expectations. Chipkin provided a purpose-built Chipkin QuickServer, created the configuration and MIB deliverables, and helped the project move from protocol mismatch to working visibility.

Modbus TCP to SNMP Challenge
The upstream side of the project was a bank of 27 CRAC units communicating over Modbus TCP. The downstream side was Sunbird P-IQ, which needed an SNMP view of the same operational data for DCIM monitoring. That meant the project had to do more than expose registers. It had to translate the cooling data into an SNMP structure the monitoring platform could consume with less manual interpretation.
A major challenge was defining the SNMP handoff correctly. The customer needed not just a gateway configuration, but a usable MIB and clarity around how the monitored data would appear on the SNMP side. That is a common issue in cross-protocol monitoring projects: the transport path can be healthy while the monitoring model is still unclear. Chipkin helped close that gap by turning the upstream Modbus data into a clearer downstream SNMP MIB and OID structure.
The project also involved questions around SNMP traps and monitoring expectations. Without that clarification, the customer risked losing time on avoidable DCIM-side confusion even after the gateway was online.
Why Chipkin
This was a strong fit for Chipkin because it combined a practical HVAC monitoring requirement with a protocol pair that many integrators do not handle every day. Chipkin QuickServer provided the conversion platform, while Chipkin support helped define the SNMP-side handoff in a way Sunbird P-IQ could use. For projects like this, the value is not only the gateway. It is the combination of configuration, protocol knowledge, and support that reduces commissioning risk.
The Solution
Chipkin configured Chipkin QuickServer between the CRAC units and the Sunbird P-IQ environment shown in the diagram above. The work centered on translating the upstream Modbus TCP data into a downstream SNMP presentation, preparing the associated MIB information, and aligning the handoff with the customer’s DCIM workflow.
Instead of leaving the customer to build the monitoring model from raw Modbus points alone, Chipkin packaged the conversion into something easier to review and deploy. That gave MAPIT a cleaner path from device data to system-level monitoring.
CRAC Unit Integration Results
The result was a successful Modbus TCP to SNMP integration for 27 CRAC units feeding a Sunbird P-IQ monitoring workflow.
Before Chipkin, the project still needed a defined SNMP-side model, MIB structure, and a clear understanding of how the cooling data would appear inside DCIM. After Chipkin, the customer had a configured QuickServer, a reviewable SNMP handoff, and a path to bring the CRAC-unit data into Sunbird P-IQ with less guesswork.
Project proof points:
- 27 CRAC units brought into the integration scope
- 16-day delivery window from kickoff to completed handoff
- 10 support hours invested to configure and align the solution
- 3 configuration revisions completed during review and clarification
- 1 live support call used to keep the project moving
“The support from Chipkin was instrumental in getting our systems integrated smoothly.”
— Technical Controller, MAPIT
